Away to high flying Monaghan on a Sunday afternoon is different and difficult. Beaten 2-0 with the second goal coming late, it was a good performance from the Youths and with a bit of luck, we might have got something from it. Monaghan made light work of our defence in the first half hour but only had a goal to show for it. The next hour was different.  There were times when a neutral would have wondered which team was chasing the title – Danny Furlong and Shane Dempsey showed quality in the middle of the park that the home side could only wish for, while Darragh Walshe up front put in another powerful performance. Good to see James Darmody hold his own on the left side – certainly has potential.

The 18′s had a Wexford League game on Saturday and came through 4-0 against Shamrock Rovers. With just 11 players, we had to play one of our keepers outfield – it was a tough game and closer than the scoreline suggests. 1-0 at half time, it took some particularly  good goals to make the game safe. Eric Banville had grabbed the opening goal and added another beauty in the second period, from an Arron Kinsella cross. It was Arron again that layed on another for Joseph Barry Wallace and a screamer from man of the match Gary Delaney wrapped it up. Next up for the 18′s on Saturday week, it’s down to the real business of the All Ireland FAI Youth Cup at home to Peak Villa from Tipperary.

A panel of 28 players have been chosen for the Under 16s – this will be cut to 20 in a few weeks’ time. It’s never easy picking the panel, particularly difficult this season. I’m human and make lots of mistakes – if I’ve left out players that I should have picked, I will not rule out the possibility of them joining the squad at a later stage. Could players please text mobile numbers to Mick Wallace on 087 2454510 to facilitate the organising of training.

What a difference a day makes. The League of Ireland seniors trailed Athlone three times on Friday night 1-0, 2-1, 3-2 but each time fought back to level, the game finishing 3-3 as Dean Broaders scored a super goal in the last second of the game. So often this season the Youths have lacked the fight to come from behind so it was great to see the never say die spirit against Athlone – Darragh Walshe grabbing his first of the season and the Youth’s opener, Danny Furlong made it 2-2 before Broaders made it 3-3. Oh, that felt so much better. Saturday was the turn of the 19s who didn’t have to play an 18s game as well, for a change – a 1-0 win over Mervue was just the tonic. As with many of the 19′s games, the two sides were evenly matched and it took a brilliant piece of play to divide them. A super ball from David Miller out to Ben Duffy on the right wing and his first time cross was met with perfection by the excellent Gary Delaney. We had been under a fair amount of pressure for much of the second period but our defence came good as Craig McCabe, Aidan Lehane and Ian Sinnott were dominant. The midfield triangle of Donal Shanley, Aaron Kinsella and Gary Delaney were solid throughout while Ben Duffy and Rioghan Crosbie had a good day on the flanks. After a difficult start , hopefully the fixtures will be kinder to us and allow our small pool of players the opportunity to still make an impression in this inaugural Under 19 League of Ireland.
